  • 1 pound crumbled ground beef
  • 1 yellow onion, diced
  • 3 to 4 pounds potatoes, peeled and sliced
  • 8 ounces (or more) Cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 can Cheddar cheese soup mix
  • 12 ounces evaporated milk (or whole milk)
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper


  1. Preheat Oven:
    • Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Prepare Baking Dish:
    • Spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
  3. Cook Meat and Onions:
    • In a large skillet, add the diced onion and ground beef. Cook until the meat is browned and the onions are soft.
  4. Slice Potatoes:
    • Peel and slice the potatoes into approximately 1/4-inch slices.
  5. Layer Ingredients:
    • Add a layer of potato slices to the bottom of the baking dish.

    • In a bowl, combine the Cheddar cheese soup mix, evaporated milk, and regular milk. Add additional salt and pepper if desired.
    • Pour the cheese sauce mixture evenly over the layered potatoes and beef.
  7. Bake:
    • Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil.
    • Place in the preheated oven and bake for 1 hour.
    • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes to achieve a golden, bubbly topping.
  8. Serve:
