  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 6 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring

  • 1/2 cup buttermilk (or substitute with milk + 1 tsp vinegar)

  1. Preheat Oven:
    Preheat your oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Grease and line an 8×8-inch baking pan with parchment paper.

  2. Melt Butter & Mix Sugar:
    Melt butter in a saucepan or microwave. Stir in sugar until combined.

  3. Add Eggs & Vanilla:
    Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla.

  4. Add Cocoa Powder:
    Mix in cocoa powder until smooth.

  5. Combine Dry Ingredients:
    In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt.

  6. Mix Wet & Dry:
    Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk to the wet mixture, mixing just until combined.

  7. Add Food Coloring:
    Stir in red food coloring until batter is evenly colored.

  8. Bake:
    Pour batter into prepared pan and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out with a few moist crumbs.

  9. Cool & Serve:
    Let cool completely before cutting into squares.
