Old-Fashioned Chocolate Cake Recipe
For the Cake:
1¾ cups (220g) all-purpose flour
¾ cup (65g) unsweetened cocoa powder
2 cups (400g) granulated sugar
2 tsp baking powder
1½ tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
2 large eggs
1 cup (240ml) milk
½ cup (120ml) vegetable oil
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup (240ml) boiling water (or hot coffee for deeper flavor)
For the Frosting:
½ cup (115g) butter, softened
⅔ cup (55g) unsweetened cocoa powder
3 cups (375g) powdered sugar
⅓ cup (80ml) milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
Make the Cake:
1. Preheat oven to 175°C (350°F). Grease and flour two 8-inch pans.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
3. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
4. Stir in boiling water (batter will be thin).
5. Pour into pans and bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
6. Let cool 10 minutes in pans, then transfer to a wire rack.
Make the Frosting:
1. Cream butter until smooth.
2. Stir in cocoa powder.
3. Add powdered sugar and milk alternately, beating until spreadable.
4. Mix in vanilla.
